At STA Traffic Management Solutions, we love working on big projects. It’s exciting to see Melbourne develop and we enjoy our ring-side seat. At the moment our crew is currently working on one of the biggest infrastructure projects in the state – the West Gate Tunnel project.
When one of the huge tunnel boring machines arrived in Melbourne recently, we were tasked with the important job of closing the roads so it could be moved from the port to the work site.
Two of these state-of-the-art machines – named Bella and Vida, will bore through the ground under Melbourne to build the project’s twin tunnels. When fully assembled the large tunnel borers with powerful cutter heads are both a massive 90 metres long, reach more than 15 metres high and weigh in at an impressive 4000 tonnes.
Bella and Vida’s work is crucial to the major project, which will create an outbound tunnel stretching about four kilometres and a 2.8km inbound tunnel. The project will provide a much needed alternative to the West Gate Bridge.
